"What, me worry?"
8 Simple Ways to Reduce Yours

With the New Year, often comes the desire to make positive change in our lives. One popular and worthwhile area involves reducing stress and worry.

Here are 8 simple techniques from The Stress Owner’s Manual that have been shown to reduce daily stress.

“Box” your worries. Categorize your worries into things you can/cannot control and things that are important/unimportant. If something is important and you can do something about it, take action. If unimportant and/or you cannot do anything about it, let the worry go.

Don’t take work home… or take home to work. “Decompress” as you make the transitions between one area of your life to another. For example, listen to your music, take a walk, soak in a tub.

Look for the humor in every situation. Take yourself lightly and your work seriously. Read fun things—comics, cartoons, jokes—and share them with others. Laughter, and even simply smiling, unleashes a cascade of physiological benefits.

Cultivate a “can do” attitude. As Norman Vincent Peale said: “You are not what you think you are…but what you think, you are.” Cultivating optimism not only improves your emotions and thinking ability but has been proven to be contagious to those around you.

Stop assuming the worst. When you encounter a challenge, try to see it as “an opportunity in work clothes.”

Take a 5 minute break. At least every hour, get up from your chair, stretch and move around. Set a timer for yourself, if necessary.

Watch less TV. Avoid depressing or violent programs or aimlessly channel surfing. Select programs that educate or uplift, such as Discovery Channel and PBS.

Choose to be happy. Abraham Lincoln once said, “Most folks are as happy as they choose to be.” Each day make a conscious effort to emphasize the positive and disregard the negative. A morning practice of counting the things you are grateful for in your life can shift your consciousness in a powerful way for the day ahead. Use The Law of Attraction by visualizing yourself having a positive day.
