Vital Vision Tips for computer users

Do you ever experience blurred vision, dizziness, or headaches? These can be symptoms of eyestrain and your monitor may be contributing.

A study at Cornell University found you can avoid computer eyestrain by occasionally adjusting your focus to distant objects to relax eye muscles. Also, the best monitor position is at or below your horizontal line of sight and 18 to 30 inches from your eyes.

Make sure you have an antiglare filter on your computer monitor. In a study of optical glass antiglare filters, 80% of users said the filters made it easier for them to read the computer screen, and 89% said filters increased the quality of the screen image. The percentage of computer users complaining of tired eyes dropped from 86% to 40%... lethargy from 78% to 36%... itching or watery eyes from 60% to 28%... focusing trouble from 60% to 33%... dry eyes from 53% to 24%... headaches from 53% to 32%.

Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is commonly under-diagnosed and on the rise. Those who spend extended time in front of computers, video games and TV have a higher risk factor in developing DES. The behavior of staring at monitors reduces the blink rate to five times less frequently than normal. DES causes a range of symptoms from discomfort, redness, irritation to pain, light sensitivity, a gritty sensation, itching, blurring of vision and sometimes causes an excess tears. This happens when the eye isn't getting enough lubrication and the eye is flooded with tears to try to compensate for the underlying dryness. However, these tears are mostly water and do not have the lubricating qualities or the rich composition of normal tears. If you suspect DES, see your ophthalmologist for diagnosis and treatment, which is simple and painless.

He cites extensive research that shows Bilberry, a supplement which is extracted from blueberries, to be rich in anthocyanins, chemicals that keep capillary walls strong and flexible and is loaded with antioxidants that defend delicate tissue against free-radical damage. Bilberry has been found to protect the retina and its blood supply, preventing and improving visual disorders such as macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and poor night vision
