2011's Hottest NEW Tech Trends and Gadgets

If you couldn’t make it out to Las Vegas this year for the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, here are the hottest new trends and products that will be creating buzz this year.

The 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the world’s largest consumer technology trade show and THE place where the electronics industry goes to strut their stuff. A “who’s who” of the technology world, this year’s event drew 2700 technology companies and over 140,000 industry professionals, who compared and evaluated the latest in electronic gadgetry, some of which hasn’t even hit store shelves.

The Mid-Atlantic region was represented by 125 technology companies, one of whom took a Best of Innovation 2011 prize. GoldenEar Technology, based in Stevenson, Maryland, was a top winner for its SuperCinema 3, a 5.1 Loudspeaker System engineered to deliver superb performance with both music and movies as sources.

For more on the trends, video keynotes by industry heavyweights can be viewed, including Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s generally-criticized “underwhelming” presentation.

Enterprise-worthy trends include strides in notebook design, printer functionality, and data storage solutions. Eight trends to watch in the coming year include:

  1. Tablets – Over 80 were launched at CES, many using the Android platform and all vying for a chunk of the Apple iPad pie. The Cisco Cius (already out) and the Blackberry Playbook (due out later this year from RIM) are expected to be the best bets for the enterprise.
  2. Smartphones – More device options proliferate this year, some promise more value for the same cost. Google’s Android system is at the center of many of those smartphone announcements.
  3. 4G-Capable Devices – Verizon touted its 4G LTE service at CES while Sprint and T-Mobile position for their 4G rollouts. Several new 4G-capable devices will hit store shelves this year.
  4. Notebooks – As the enterprise becomes more mobile, enterprise notebook users will benefit from design enhancements, including improved screen quality, reduced weight, and enhanced processing power.
  5. Netbooks – These lightweight computers are still in the game, but how long they will be viable in the face of the tablet onslaught remains to be seen.
  6. Printers – May not be flashy but advanced models at CES offer faster print times, high resolution, cost effective options, especially for those executives who need an all-in-one printer in their office. Wireless-enable printing is also a hot category.
  7. Storage – Look for larger-than-ever amounts of data storage with improved security.
  8. Windows 8 – You may still be weighing the prospect of enterprise-wide migration to Windows 7 but Windows 8 is on Microsoft’s roadmap.
